Tiakina is an innovative youth mental health and wellbeing hub, based in Christchurch, where four different services are delivered.
- Tiakina Wellbeing Programme: provides daily sessions based on the five ways to wellbeing for young people aged 14-19 years who have a mental health diagnosis. Referrals are accepted from Child, Adolescent & Family (CAF). View the Term Two Schedule here.
- Youth Community Support Service: supports youth 1:1 in the community with their goals for up to one year. This service covers the area from Ashburton to Amberley. Referrals are accepted from CAF.
- Early Intervention Youth Community Support Workers: are attached to the Early Intervention Psychosis Pathway for youth aged between 14-19 years. This is a two-year intensive service and referrals come directly from the Pathway for this service.
- Specialist Support Service: provides Specialist Assessors who complete needs assessments for whanau who have a diagnosed or suspected disability, and where possible will address the needs or refer to the appropriate service and remain connected until the appropriate provider commences support. The aim of this service is for whanau to thrive. Referrals come through Oranga Tamariki.
To access the Tiakina Wellbeing Service, a young person must already be under the care of Specialist Mental Health Services (CAF). This is because referrals must come from a CAF case manager, who will continue to support the young person while they are engaged with our service.
If the young person is not currently under CAF, the first step is a GP visit and request a referral to CAF from them.
Who can refer into CAF:
- GPs
- School counsellors
- Private counsellors
- Crisis Mental Health Services (following a triage assessment)
