Sextortion is a form of online harm, occurring when someone is manipulated into sharing intimate images before being threatened, blackmailed, or extorted. With case numbers rising significantly in Aotearoa New Zealand, Ignite has partnered with Netsafe to help address the growing impact it is having on people of all ages and backgrounds.
Announced this week, Ignite will provide free counselling support for people affected by sextortion.
“Our mental health services need to meet the modern problems New Zealanders face,” says Ignite Director, Sarina Finucane. “Online harm is becoming increasingly common as we navigate a digital world.”
The partnership will connect people with Ignite support providers who have received specialist training from Netsafe on recognising online harm and its impacts, including sextortion and image-based abuse.
“Sextortion is about control. Someone has your private image and they’re threatening you,” says Sarina Finucane. “There can be a real feeling of exposure, shame and loss of control. Talking to someone creates a safe space to process what has happened, de-escalate things, and provide tools to help get your agency and control back.”
The partnership gives people a way to access help with the emotional impact of sextortion, alongside Netsafe’s support in responding to the online harm itself.
