Sustaining Tenancies: Tony’s story

Jun 21, 2024

Tony* was first put in touch with the Sustaining Tenancies service by Kainga Ora as he was becoming unable to maintain his home. Having lost his wife 14 years ago, he no longer felt he had the drive or skills to keep up maintenance on the property he rented, which had significantly deteriorated. Tony found the situation overwhelming, working and living in his bedroom as other rooms were piled high with belongings.

How we supported Tony

One day, Sustaining Tenancies team member Tash* was talking with her colleagues about how a group she was involved with wanted to do some community work. They wondered if Tony would like some help sorting out his property. Tony was reluctant to accept help but, following reassuring conversations with Sustaining Tenancies, he agreed to allow the team into his home. Along with coordination from Kainga Ora, a plan was put in place to spend a Saturday morning helping Tony regain the full use of his property.

The difference we made

Working with Tony, Tash and the group achieved some incredible results. They removed the excess clutter and rubbish, the whole time checking with Tony about what valued possessions he wanted to keep. They then cleaned the lounge and kitchen to return it to a comfortable, clean, and liveable home he could manage.

How is Tony doing now?

Tony was thankful for the support he received from Tash’s group and the Sustaining Tenancies team. Supports have been put in place to assist him to maintain the property and he is now doing very well.
